In a close analysis of the play, Othello reveals various psychological dimensions that have been employed in characterization in the play. However, the most dominating psychological dimension is the application of the universal law of cause and effect also known as karma (Rosenberg, 2012).
The universal law of cause and effect holds that for every single action, the universe produces a reaction no matter what. The universal law of cause and action is demonstrated in various instances in the exploration of the play’s plotline. For instance, the dynamic between Othello and Iago and the socio-cultural conflict between the two usurps Othello’s marriage and friendship as depicted by the fate of both Iago and Desdemona.
The hate that Iago harbors towards Othello due to him being different from others pushes him towards convincing him that his wife, Desdemona has betrayed him; this ends in Desdemona being murdered in her bed while still in her wedding gown.
On the hand, the friendship between Iago and Othello changes as the plot against Othello Iago intensifies and becomes more sinister due to Othello’s refusal to promote Iago to “the moors” lieutenant (Rosenberg, 2012). Secondly, both Cassio and Desdemona pay the price for Iago’s villainy and plots; as earlier stated above, Iago convinces Othello of Desdemona’s infidelity by proofing that Cassio and Desdemona are in a romantic relationship.
To convince Othello, Iago uses Desdemona’s handkerchief; Iago takes a handkerchief that Othello has given to Desdemona, and he plants this handkerchief in Cassio’s room as proof of infidelity. Cassio ends up being stabbed in an altercation involving Iago and Roderigo while Desdemona is killed in her bed as a result of the schemes protracted by Iago.
